The IKWF should follow the IESA No Pass No Play rule. School first. Wrestling second.

And I suppose you would be the person who would monitor the thousands of wrestlers report cards? Or do you expect the Volunteer coaches, who already have enough on their plate to do it? Here is a novel idea; How about letting the PARENTS monitor their kids grades. The IKWF is not affiliated with the schools. They are a wrestling organization who already has too many responsibilities. Why do you feel they should have the no pass no play, just curious?

If a kid is failing in school it should be up to the parents to do the right thing.
Parents who allow their children to compete now while falling short in academics are not doing their kids any favors. That kid will learn a hard lesson in HS.
Parents need to take a reality check and do the right thing!

I don't think Little League or Pony League baseball have any grade requirements.

While I agree that it is not the coach's but rather the parents' responsibility to monitor the kids' grades and progress in school, I feel as coaches we are in a unique position to support the parents and stress the improtance of grades first.
I have had several situations over the past decade of coaching where a parent has had an issue with a kid's grades and/or behavior.
I let the kids know at the beginning of the season that school comes first. I told them I expect homeowkr to be done before practice and if it is not done, don't come to practice. Obviously, the parents must be willing to enforce this.
But, this has worked in the past with parents who have had problems because, while a child will try to do wahtever they can to manipulate the parent, the parent can say it is not just my rule, but coach's rule as well.
Same thing fo behavior. I had 2 who were approaching thier teen years and starting to get into trouble - nothing serious at the time, but they were defineitly heading in the right direction. Each Saturday morning (this was football) the kids had to give me a letter from their teachers and from their parents letting me know how they behaved for the week. If they were a problem, or I didn't get a note, it either reduced or elimiated ther playing time. In this instance, they were still required to come to the games and missing practice was also not an option since they would have more time for mischief. They are both doing great now - one is a senior and one is in college and both are doing great.
We, as coaches, need to take an active interest in our kids, on and off the mat. Very few will go on to be collegiate/Olympic wrestlers, but all will go on to be men and women - and we need to do our part in molding them into responsible and successful men and women.

Our club does check report cards for 80+ kids. If they don't have C's or better they don't practice or participate in tournaments. It's not difficult, does it take some time? Yes, most things worth a dam do. In my opinion it should be done by all clubs. Telling kids school comes first is only the first step. Showing them it's so by making them responsible for their grades is another. Otherwise it's just talk. If parents aren't "doing the right thing" is it not the coaches problem? Plenty of kids have come into wrestling rooms from home life that is less than ideal where academia isn't a priority. Does that mean it's not the coaches or clubs problem??? That's what your saying by ignoring no pass no play and putting it on the parents alone. Maybe the wrestling community can help to turn a kid or two around with no pass no play. Each club should be responsible to the IKWF(in IL)for showing passing grades for their roster. Just my opinion. But I'm very happy our club does it.
If you really mean what you say, that school comes first, prove it. Otherwise it's just talk.

Great concept; nearly impossible to enforce. We make a big deal when kids bring in their report cards and show off those nifty A's... heck we have had some coaches bring their graduate school report cards in and brag on their A's!
