I was at the Roth Rumble at Willowbrook High School taking in some wrestling yesterday, when I couldnt help but wonder something. If you are a known "stud", do you get some better calls then say a lesser known kid? I saw a kid from the Little Celtics clearly pin one of these "studs" from Gomez, from where I was sitting it appeared as though the Gomez kid just layed there for 3 or 4 seconds without moving. Then with only a few seconds left in the match the situation was reveresed and the Celtic was on his back, fighting as much as he can, and the ref called a quick pin with 2 seconds remaining on the clock. I didnt understand how he could call that pin so quick, when he couldnt seem to find one earlier in the match for the other kid. I am not trying to talk bad about the refs or anything like that, I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed things like this? Either way, it was a great match to watch, definetly worth the $5 admission at Willowbrook!

In the south I completely disagree. Many officials try to "even" the match out or try to "teach " the lesser wrestling during the matches.
Ex#1) Wrestler B backs out of bounds off the whistle over 7 times in a 1 minute period and isn't bumped for stalling. After the 3rd or 4th time and obvious disgust the official starts to tell the wrestler that he can not back up like that, but never bumps him. After the match the official's explantion is that he didn't want to scare the inexperienced wrestler and wanted to teach him what stalling is.
My Point of view - Why is the official trying to teach the wrestler instead of officiating the match (what he is paid to do), and why is wrestler A forced to take bad shots/position or chase to score (with opponent continually backing). IMO wrestler B is not being taught the rules, and wrestler A is being forced into bad technique and practices?
Ex 2) Many of the southern wrestlers have had problems with a certain officials pratices. He is an antagonist that tries to dictate matches and unlevel the playing field, showing preference to the less talented wrestlers. He has actually made the comment that he holds certain kids to higher standards.
IMO the official doesn't have the right to hold certain kids to higher standards and I think it is BS that any official does this. Every match should try to be officiated consistently with no bias toward either wrestler. Officials are PAID to call the match. It is not the officials job or right to do so!
.....I know every official has their own opinion of criteria, etc , and I completely understand that. All I ask is an attempt at consistency. Officials should not worry about the wrestlers name or team and ref the match. Also....stalling should be called the same in the 1st period at 0-0 as it is called in the 3rd period with a wrestler up by 1 defending. OKAY, I'm off my soap box. Good luck to all you grapplin families
